Hi-tech ‘Trojan horse’ can kill cancer cells: researchers

Australian researchers are set to begin human trials of a tiny nano-cell that acts as a “Trojan horse” against cancer cells, a breakthrough they say may curb the need for debilitating chemotherapy.

The technology could eventually allow cancer sufferers to receive treatment as outpatients, rather than being hospitalised for lengthy bouts of chemotherapy, according to the researchers.

Himanshu Brahmbhatt from Sydney-based biotechnology company EnGeneIC said the research — outlined in the journal Nature Biotechnology — had the potential to reduce the side-effects of cancer treatment and make it cheaper.

Whole-cooked carrots “better for fighting cancer”

The anti-cancer properties of carrots are enhanced 25 percent if they are cooked whole rather than chopped up beforehand, a study has found.

They taste better too, according to scientists at Newcastle University, because more of their sugar is retained.

“Chopping up your carrots increases the surface area so more of the nutrients leach out into the water while they are cooked,” said lead researcher Dr Kirsten Brandt.

“By cooking them whole and chopping them up afterwards, you are locking in both taste and nutrients.”

Brandt, along with colleagues at the University of Denmark, discovered the health benefits of the anti-cancer substance falcarinol in carrots four years ago.

A blind taste test they conducted among 100 people also found 80 percent preferred the taste of whole-cooked carrots.

The study, conducted by researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, contradicts earlier information indicating blacks with Alzheimer’s live longer than whites with the disease.

Ignored cholesterol blamed for heart attacks

Danish researchers said on Tuesday they have found the strongest evidence yet that an often ignored form of cholesterol can cause heart attacks.

They said people with higher levels of a little-understood form of cholesterol called lipoprotein (a), which varies up to a thousand fold from one person to another, were also more likely to have heart attacks.

Statins — taken by millions to cut heart attack and stroke risk — do not affect lipoprotein (a) but the findings may encourage the development of new cholesterol-lowering drugs, said Borge Nordestgaard of Copenhagen University Hospital, who led the study.

Appetite problems? Try aerobics

AerobicsWant to cut down on all those calories but don’t know how? Well, working out might be the answer, for researchers have found that aerobic exercises increase a blood protein that may suppress appetite.

Researchers at the University of Chile Clinical Hospital in Santiago conducted a study in which they found that aerobic exercise decreases body fat and calorie intake in overweight and obese people.

They believe that this happens because exercise brings about changes to a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, whose main role is promoting the growth and survival of nerve cells.
